Unaffiliated with Major League Baseball or its official minor-league ranks, the Riversharks have competed in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball since 2001, following the opening of Campbell’s Field.
“We have been working in good faith since the CCIA purchased the ballpark this summer,” said team general manager Lindsay Rosenberg. “Unfortunately, we have been unable to reach an agreement in time to be included on the 2016 Atlantic League schedule.”
Though it once included the likes of the former Atlantic City Surf and Newark Bears, the Atlantic League will now be home to only one New Jersey-based team, Bridgewater’s Somerset Patriots.
Rosenberg said that over 3.5 million fans have attended Riversharks games in the last 15 years.
“We would like to thank our partners and fans for supporting the club for 15 memorable seasons,” Rosenberg said. “We did everything we could to keep affordable, family entertainment alive and well in Camden.”
But despite the loss of the Riversharks, baseball may still be in the future plans for Campbell’s Field, located near the foot of the Ben Franklin Bridge with views of the Philadelphia skyline.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the stadium, which has twice been named “Ballpark of the Year” by Baseball America, may look to replace the Riversharks with a single-A minor-league baseball team associated with a professional franchise.
The Inquirer also noted that the Philadelphia Phillies would have to approve the relocation of such a team to Camden since the area is included in the team’s baseball jurisdiction.
