Cyberattack hits Cooper Health, affecting nearly 60K patients

A on last year may have exposed the data of nearly 60,000 current and former patients, according to the Camden-based health care system.

After detecting unusual activity on its network in May 2024, Cooper “immediately” took steps to secure its systems and launched an investigation, it said in an alert posted online.

Once Cooper determined that “certain data stored in our systems was potentially acquired without authorization during the incident,” it began “a comprehensive review of the impacted data to identify the individuals and information involved.”

Cooper said it completed its investigation March 26, 2025, and “then took steps to provide notification as quickly as possible.”

According to Cooper, the potentially affected information may have included:
  • Names
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Health insurance information
  • Treatment information
  • Medical record numbers
  • Medical history information

 

As South Jersey’s largest health care system, Cooper’s footprint spans three hospitals (Cooper University Hospital, Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper and Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional), six urgent care centers and more than 130 outpatient officers. Cooper also runs the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper.

According to a notice published by the Office of the Maine Attorney General, the affected 57,412 individuals. The Maine AG listed the data breach because one state resident was affected. Cooper did not specify how many New Jersey residents were affected.

In addition to reporting the incident to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cooper said it implemented additional measures to enhance network security to minimize risk of similar incidents in the future.

It also set up a toll-free call center to handle questions about the incident and to address related concerns. Call center representatives are available at 1-877-623-0094 Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., excluding holidays.

Cooper is offering complimentary identity protection services, as well.
