The New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians (NJAFP) recently presented Dr. Robert Gorman with the Chair Award at the NJAFP’s Family Medicine Forum in Atlantic City.

The NJAFP, the largest primary care medical specialty society in the state, is engaged in health care practice transformation and advocacy, advancing the specialty of family medicine and improving access to high-quality health care for patients.

The Chair Award is awarded to a person who has dedicated a lifetime of service to both the Academy and the specialty of family medicine. NJAFP honored Gorman, a board-certified family physician, for his commitment to family medicine and contributions to community health and the state of New Jersey.

“Dr. Gorman is a physician’s physician,” said Dr. Peter Carrazzone, a family physician and colleague at Vanguard Medical Group. “He is an attentive listener, thoughtful and extremely well-liked by patients, peers and staff. He has been a long-time advocate for family physicians and is a great role model for all,” said Carrazzone.

Gorman joined the NJAFP in 1985 and became a member of the board of directors in 2010. He served as president in 2015. Board-certified in family medicine, he co-founded Vanguard Medical Group in Verona where he has been actively practicing family medicine for more than 30 years.

Currently, Gorman serves as chairman of the department of family medicine and member of the medical executive committee at Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Center. He is an assistant clinical professor of family medicine at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School and school physician for the Cedar Grove Public Schools.

“Family medicine is distinguished by the personal relationships that we have with our patients and the longitudinal care that we provide,” said Gorman. “Those relationships are also what I enjoy most about my work.”
