The Intelligent Transportation Society of New Jersey (ITSNJ) named Jersey City‘s popular on-demand ride-share service as its 2022 Outstanding Program of the Year.
Awarded annually to projects that advance technology to improve the efficiency, safety and mobility of surface transportation, ITSNJ evaluates programs based on social and economic sustainability, uniqueness/originality of innovation, demonstrated need and future value.
Jennifer Marandino, ITSNJ awards committee chair, said the organization is proud to recognize Jersey City’s program, “especially given the theme of this year’s annual meeting: Transportation Equity Through Technology.”

“The project helps provide an important linkage for the local community, providing accessible and affordable transit options,” she said.
Launched in 2020, Via Jersey City – the state’s first publicly subsidized transportation service – is operated in partnership with New York City-based Transit Tech company Via and aims to connect transit deserts while providing a low-cost alternative for residents.
The flexible transportation option enables any rider in the city’s service zone to book an on-demand ride through the Via app or by calling 201-514-6637.
Over the past two-and-a-half years, Via Jersey City has surpassed 1 million rides and serves more than 57,000 riders per month, the city said.
According to data provided by the city, most Via trips are considered “essential,” with 61% of riders reporting they primarily use the service to get to work, school and medical appointments. Additionally, the most common pick-up and drop-off points include Jersey City’s public transit hubs that connect with New York City and neighboring Hudson County municipalities.
In a statement, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said, “We sought to improve mobility with an affordable and reliable transportation system and, as a result, low- to moderate-income residents now have access to 35% more jobs, schools and hospitals within 30 minutes that before Via Jersey City existed.”
Fulop added, “We’re grateful ITSNJ recognizes our efforts with this competitive award and we remain committed to finding innovative solutions that break down the systemic barriers disproportionately affecting our urban areas most.”
