When it comes to the best and most convenient spots to grab a sandwich, two New Jersey brands are among America’s favorite places to go.
As part of USA Today’s 2024 readers’ choice travel awards, a ranking of the 10 best sandwich chains across the country included PrimoHoagies and Jersey Mike’s Subs.
Awarded annually ahead of the summer travel season, the recognition aims to provide trusted recommendations for food, lodging, destinations, travel gear and activities. According to USA Today, an expert panel selected finalists and readers voted on the winners.
For a second year in a row, Westville-based PrimoHoagies was ranked as America’s No. 1 sandwich shop.
Nicholas Papanier Jr., PrimoHoagies’ owner, president and chief executive officer, believes the award underscores the brand’s commitment to quality and the loyalty of its customers.
He went on to note that customer trust and satisfaction is what inspires the company “to maintain high standards and strive for excellence in every bite.”
“We are incredibly grateful to our loyal fans for their unwavering support and for voting PrimoHoagies as #1 in America by USA Today for two consecutive years … Thank you for being a part of the PrimoHoagies family and helping us achieve this remarkable milestone,” said Papanier.
Known for its specialty sandwiches made with high-quality meats, cheeses and fresh-baked rolls, the 31-year-old franchise plans to surpass 300 restaurants over the next five years. It currently has more than 115 locations across the U.S., including more than 30 in New Jersey.
“If Italian specialty sandwiches are your jam, PrimoHoagies is definitely the place for you,” USA Today editors wrote. “Their menu has 10 sandwich categories to choose from, including Italian classics, Philly cheesesteaks … and even meatless.”
Jersey Mike’s, headquartered in Point Pleasant, came in at No. 7. Last year, it ranked No. 6.
Founded in 1956, Jersey Mike’s started out as a small sandwich shop in Point Pleasant. Now, it is one of the fastest-growing quick service restaurants in the U.S., with more than 3,000 locations. Earlier this year, Jersey Mike’s announced an agreement with one of Canada’s largest restaurant operators to open 300 shops across the country by 2034.
In describing the brand, USA Today editors wrote that Jersey Mike’s has been “perfecting the art of the quick-but-tasty sub” for nearly seven decades.
