That New Jersey calls Toys R Us its own might still be one of the state’s best-kept secrets.
The world’s largest standalone toy store chain got its start in 1948 in the township of Wayne and has kept its headquarters stationed there ever since.
And although it has had some publicized troubles over the past decade due to stiff competition from Wal-Mart and Target, Toys R Us still stands out in New Jersey in terms of size, with the $11.8 billion it brought in revenue last year.
The company’s brands include Babies R Us and FAO Schwarz, and it also has e-commerce sites for each of its retail arms. Kids R Us, a spinoff children’s clothing retailer first introduced in Paramus, has been dropped by the company.
The company owns or licenses around 800 Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores in the United States, and also owns or licenses more than 1,000 international stores.
