Last month, a man who had traveled from Las Vegas to New York walked into a Manhattan office building with a high-powered rifle, law enforcement authorities say, and killed four people, including two security guards, one of whom was an off-duty police officer.

Much of the discussion in the immediate aftermath of the shooting focused on the suspect’s identity, background and possible motives. But many observers also questioned how he was able to enter the building and move freely enough to find his victims.

Brian Higgins is all too familiar with such scenarios and the questions the incidents raise. Higgins is a former chief of the Bergen County Police and teaches at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. He is also the founder and president of Group 77, a security and public safety consulting firm based in Mahwah.

In this edition of NJBIZ Conversations, Higgins discusses the security needs of workplaces, including hospitals and the kind of office buildings that the Manhattan shooter attacked, along with the financial implications for building owners.
