Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Two years ago, Zeynep Ekemen and her partners began developing an antimicrobial film to cover high-touch surfaces in public buildings. They started because like many folks, they thought doorknobs were disgusting. By January 2020, the product was ready. Then the COVID-19 pandemic created an urgent need for just that kind of protection.

In the latest edition of NJBIZ Conversations, Editor Jeff Kanige speaks with Ekemen about the company, Fort Lee-based Silver Defender, how the film works and where it’s being installed. “It’s about six months now and we are everywhere domestically—in every sector from airports to schools, government buildings, retail, office buildings,” she said. “We’re actually on every common area door of the World Trade Center building.” Watch the full interview here.
