Politico recently called U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill “the most important woman in Congress” even though fellow freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has been at the center of Washington politics since her upset primary victory last fall.
In fact, all four of New Jersey’s newly elected Democrats – Sherrill, Kim, Malinowski and Van Drew – rank among the most important people in the capital for a simple reason: they helped deliver the House majority to the Democrats by winning Republican-held seats in the 2018 midterm elections.
Congressional Democrats seem to recognize the Garden State quartet’s importance. Sherrill and Kim both landed spots on the high-profile Armed Services Committee and both were named to chair subcommittees. Van Drew is serving on the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, a strong perch from which to serve a district that includes farmland and miles of shoreline.
