According to several media reports, the worldwide technology outage affecting airlines and businesses has caused delays at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The outage was caused by a software update for Microsoft Windows operating systems issued by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, according to a CNN report. In a blog post, CrowdStrike stressed the incident “was not a cyberattack.”
Early July 19, Newark airport posted on X advising travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. That was followed by another post stating that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was not affected by the outage but, again, to check flights before heading out the door.
Additionally, NJ Transit posted that its services were unaffected by the outage other than some ticket vending machines.
Right before 9 a.m., Gov. Phil Murphy also posted on social media, “I’ve been briefed on the global technology outages which have grounded flights, disrupted banks, and slowed the work of businesses and critical services. We’ve activated our State Emergency Operations Center as of 3:00 a.m. and will be monitoring impacts throughout the day.”
About an hour later, RWJBarnabas Health shared an update, saying, “Some systems at RWJBarnabas Health have been impacted by the Global Microsoft outage. This is not a cyberattack.” University Hospital said it was not affected and “all of our facilities are operating as normal.”

NJ TRANSIT services are currently unaffected by the global cyber issue. However, some of our Ticket Vending Machines (TVM’s) are affected. Customers encountering an issue with a TVM and unable to purchase a ticket will not be denied service on rail, bus or light rail.
