Spirit Airlines said Wednesday that in response to increased demand in the region it will be adding more flights from Atlantic City International Airport to Florida and South Carolina.

The South Jersey Transportation Authority said the ultra-low-cost carrier will expand flights to and from its key markets in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Fla., and Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Flights to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) will increase to three per day, up from two, beginning on July 9; service to Orlando (MCO) will go to 19 flights per week, up from 14 flights weekly, also on July 9; and beginning on June 13, Spirit will fly to Myrtle Beach (MYR) nine times per week, up from seven.

“We also look forward to continuing to work with Spirit and local stakeholders to secure additional services at [Atlantic City airport] in the future,” Stephen Dougherty, executive director of South Jersey Transportation Authority said in a statement.

More than 1.1 million passengers used Atlantic City airport last year, with 91 percent of those flying Spirit, according to the SJTA, which said it aims to attract more than 1.2 passengers this year.
