A group of students was honored Aug. 18 for completing an 11-week intensive summer training program in the construction trades.

The program was sponsored by The Michaels Organization at Buzby Homes, the affordable housing community being redeveloped by Michaels and the Atlantic City Housing Authority, which also provided the site for much of the training the young adults received.

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. joined The Michaels Organization to recognize the graduates.

“A few months ago, the students we honor today made a simple yet life-changing decision, a decision to spend the summer investing in their future,” Small said. “And as a direct result, they have emerged stronger, wiser, and incredibly well-equipped to enter the workforce. I congratulate them on their vision and hard work, and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish in the future.”

Throughout the 11-week program, students worked Michaels and various local subcontractors to learn both soft and hard skills, included receiving hands-on experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and roofing. They also received coaching from Michaels executives and project managers on interpersonal and professional skills.

The students emerge from the program with official construction certifications and credentials, including the OSHA-10 certification required by many employers, as well as Fall Protection, Forklift, CPR, AED, and Flag certifications.

“It’s unbelievable how much these students have learned and grown in just a few months,” said Nick Cangelosi, vice president of development at the Michaels Organization. “Michaels is so proud to have worked with them and to continue nurturing our relationships with them. We know all of the students have a bright future ahead.”

Following the program, Michaels hired three of the students – two on the Buzby Homes redevelopment and one in its corporate headquarters. A fourth student earned a scholarship to Rowan University.

“Building things has always interested me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn more about construction and sharpen my skills,” said DeShawn Newby, a student in the program. “This was a great chance to get some hands-on experience with a well-respected company right here at home.”
