After 17 years at J. Crew, Lynda Markoe will join Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. in September as executive vice president, chief people and culture officer.

Markoe will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Mark Tritton, Bed Bath announced Wednesday, tasked with leading the company’s People growth pillar, one of five pillars company execs decided to focus on to drive efficiency and growth after a comprehensive review of its business in February.

The People pillar is focused on creating a talent engine and culture that attracts, retains and develops diverse and high-performing teams, the company said. Markoe will oversee the cultural transformation of the business around Bed Bath’s core values and purpose.

She brings a wealth of experience from some of the world’s leading retailers, delivering strategic results through talent management and cultural change,” Tritton said in a prepared statement. “As we rebuild our authority in the home and develop our omni-always future, Lynda’s experience and dynamic leadership will help connect our purpose, strategy and culture to accelerate the people-powered transformation of our business.”

At J.Crew Group Inc., Markoe held roles including chief administrative officer and global head of human resources. During her tenure, she drove the company’s talent organization and strategies, including developing a global workforce with capabilities across, brands, channels and locations. Markoe integrated the talent strategy and the business strategy while championing culture and associate engagement, according to her hiring announcement for Bed Bath.

Markoe was also a human resources leader at Gap Inc. from 1988 until 2003.

Markoe succeeds Bill Gilooly, who will work closely with her to ensure a smooth transition before departing the company after more than 15 years.
