The city of East Orange has approved a rent control ordinance that states landlords can’t increase the rent of senior citizens and disabled persons more than 2 percent a year. The new ordinance went into effect June 13.

“Our seniors are vital components of our community and their contributions to the city can never be underestimated or taken for granted,” East Orange Mayor Ted Green said. “While we understand that landlords must increase rents from time to time to keep up with operating expenses, we cannot allow the increases to be made at the expense of our seniors, many of whom are living on a fixed income.”
