Forbes magazine announced its annual Forbes 400 list of America’s wealthiest people Monday, and five New Jerseyans made the cut for 2014.Hedge funds certainly made a difference for these New Jersey residents, as three of the five made their money managing the high-profile investment vehicles.
Hedge fund superstar David Tepper was the richest person in New Jersey, according to Forbes, coming in at No. 45 on the list with wealth of $10 billion. The 57-year-old Livingston resident is the founder of the Appaloosa Management hedge fund firm.
Donald Newhouse, the owner of media company Advance Publications, was the second-wealthiest person in New Jersey, ranking 51st on the Forbes list with wealth of $8.4 billion. The 84-year-old Somerset County resident’s newspaper company is the owner of The Star-Ledger, among other publications.
Another hedge fund leader, Leon G. Cooperman, came in third in the state, with his wealth of $3.9 billion placing him 131st on the overall list. The 71-year-old Short Hills resident is the founder of Omega Advisors, Inc.
Former Wall Street executive Peter Kellogg finished fourth among New Jerseyans and No. 176 on the overall list, with wealth of $3.2 billion. Kellogg, also a Short Hills resident, sold his Spear, Leeds and Kellogg firm to Goldman Sachs in 2000 for $6.5 billion. The 72-year-old now runs reinsurance company IAT.
The final New Jersey resident on the list was a third hedge fund manager, Larry Robbins, whose wealth of $1.71 billion placed him at No. 373 on the Forbes list. Robbins, a 44-year-old Alpine resident, is the founder of Glenview Capital Management.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates was the richest American for the 21st consecutive year, Forbes said, claiming first place with a net worth of $81 billion.
To make the Top 400, a person needed minimum wealth of $1.55 billion, Forbes added, the highest entry point since the list started in 1982.
