Airport codes – what do they mean? EWR for seems to be a stretch from others such as PHX for Phoenix, or DAL for Dallas. But have you ever wondered why? Airport codes that start with the letter “N” are reserved for military use only, so why the “E”? E is for Elizabeth! Elizabeth NeWaRk.

Well, as many travelers who fly out of the Garden State may not know, Newark airport’s new Terminal A is actually located in the sister city of Elizabeth, N.J.

Like the airport (see Terminal A honors set a new standard for Newark airport, NJBIZ, May 6, 2024), Elizabeth has been undergoing a massive transformation, taking flight, over the last decade and amazing new projects are finally getting noticed. With the recent completion of Terminal A, Elizabeth can now proudly showcase a brand-new airport, new train station and new luxury living accommodations right in the heart of midtown Elizabeth.

The city has so much to offer and continues to be left out of the conversation in terms of the future of New Jersey, often outshined by Newark, Hoboken and Jersey City. Yet, we are the state’s fourth-largest city.

We are located in one of the most interconnected areas of the state, an absolute intersection of commerce, travel and tourism. It’s been an honor to raise my family here and call this city home which offers a big city, small town feel. There are few other communities that offer the interconnectivity that our city does. Calling it Newark-Elizabeth Liberty International Airport would reflect that and be more accurate.
