Another wave of is set to impact Macy’s workforce in New Jersey as part the retailer’s ongoing turnaround effort.

In a filing with the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development, the New York City-based department store chain said it expects to let go 79 employees statewide by March 7.

Macy’s did not identify which positions it will target or where the cuts will take place. A spokesperson did not immediately offer more details.

“As we continue advancing our Bold New Chapter growth strategy, we regularly review how our teams are structured to stay aligned with business priorities. As a result, we are making a limited number of role adjustments across a small set of functions. The majority of teams are not affected, and some roles are being added or realigned,” the media representative said.

According to the company, impacted employees have been notified and are receiving support. That includes transfer opportunities where available, or severance and outplacement resources where applicable, said.

Shuttering stores

The notice comes about a month and a half after the retailer disclosed plans to close stores in New Jersey, including its anchor spot at Livingston Mall. It also shuttered a recently opened small-format store at Interstate Shopping Center in Ramsey. Additionally, the chain’s Paramus Furniture Gallery location on Route 4 will relocate into the full-line Macy’s at Paramus Park.

The moves across the three stores will impact 89 employees. Layoffs take effect March 31 in Paramus and Ramsey, and April 30 in Livingston.

Livingston and Ramsey are among 14 outposts that Macy’s expects to wind down this year. Over the past two years, dozens of unperforming locations have already gone dark, including Macy’s off-price brand Backstage at Essex Green Shopping Center in West Orange.

In a bid to return to sustainable, profitable sales growth, Macy’s unveiled its “Bold New Chapter” restructuring strategy in 2024. At the time, the company anticipated shutting down 150 stores by the end of 2026 while reinvesting in remaining locations. Last year, Macy’s closed 66 sites.

Following the latest round of closures in Livingston and Ramsey, Macy’s will have 26 stores in New Jersey.

The retailer also has closings planned in Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington, Retail Dive reported.
