A wave of layoffs is coming to Target in New Jersey.
In a notice filed with the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development, the retail giant said it expects to eliminate 107 positions by May 17.
It doesn’t list specific locations, but said the move will impact employees in Burlington, Gloucester, Middlesex and Monmouth counties.
A spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
According to CNBC, the Minnesota-based chain plans to cut about 500 roles at distribution centers and regional offices as part of an effort to win back shoppers who have griped about sloppier shelves, out-of-stock items and longer checkout lines.
Citing an internal employee memo, the outlet reported Target will consolidate some of its roughly 2,000 store districts to streamline the structure. It will also standardize its field operating model for supply chain operations.
The changes will impact 100 roles at the store district level and about 400 roles across supply chain sites, according to CNBC.
Of the company’s 440,000 employees, the majority work in its 2,000-plus retail locations nationwide.
The latest round of job cuts adds to Target’s announcement in October 2025 that it would lay off 1,000 corporate staffers and close 800 open positions. The push to invest more into store payroll and improve customer experience is a top goal of newly named Target CEO Michael Fiddelke.
A 20-plus year veteran, Fiddelke previously served as chief operating officer. He’s also held other senior leadership roles across finance, operations, merchandising and human resources.
Since he took the helm last week, Target already unveiled additional C-suite changes, including a new chief merchandising officer and COO. Fiddelke said, “It’s the start of a new chapter for Target and we’re moving quickly to take action against our priorities that will drive growth within our business. These leadership changes align the right talent and expertise with key roles, and simplify our structure so we can advance our strategy with greater speed, clarity and accountability.”
Meanwhile, Target is continuing its plan to open 300 new stores by 2035. This year alone, it expects to launch 30 sites.
Within New Jersey, the retailer’s footprint of 53 locations will soon grow by two. Grand openings are planned March 15 at Journal Square in Jersey City and West Orange Plaza in West Orange.
Target also has multiple distribution sites in New Jersey, including in Logan Township and Perth Amboy.
