Aldi is adding a second store in Rockaway.
Located at 327 Mount Hope Ave., the value-focused grocer plans to mark its June 25 grand opening with giveaways and prizes.
As part of the festivities, the first 200 customers will receive a gift card worth up to $100 and a free tote bag filled with Aldi brand products. There will also be an 8:45 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony, the grocer said.
Founded 64 years ago in Germany, Aldi is known for its low prices and private-label brands. Since its U.S. debut in 1976, the chain has opened nearly 2,800 stores nationwide.
Offerings include dairy, eggs, produce, meat, seafood, deli, frozen foods, bakery goods, snacks, cereals, pantry essentials, beverages, alcohol, pet supplies, baby products, household supplies, personal care and seasonal items.
Aldi Regional Vice President Bob Grammer said, “At our new Rockaway Boro [sic] Aldi store, customers will see why so many already choose Aldi for their weekly grocery shopping. As shoppers look to stretch their dollar further, we’re excited to open this new location and bring more people a high-quality grocery selection they want and need at the lowest possible price. ”
The soon-to-open supermarket is about 3.5 miles away from the chain’s existing spot along Route 46.
A spokesperson for Aldi confirmed the first store will remain open to provide “Rockaway locals with more options for affordable groceries.”
The company’s strategy of doubling up in one town is not unheard of.
In Vineland, the no-frills grocer recently received local approval to convert a vacant Rite Aid pharmacy into its second store in the South Jersey city. Aldi’s media representative said additional details on that project will be shared as they become available.
Within New Jersey, Aldi will have 70 stores after Rockaway’s launch, according to its website.
As Aldi marks its 50th anniversary in the U.S., the chain is continuing its commitment to invest $9 billion domestically to expand store footprint, strengthen its supply chain and upgrade the online shopping experience.
The low-price leader recently announced plans to open more than 180 stores by the end of 2026. Within the next two years, it expects to have 3,200 stores across the country. At Rockaway Town Court, Aldi is taking a space formerly occupied by bankrupt retail chain Christmas Tree Shops.
Fellow tenants at the Washington Prime Group-owned property include Gap Factory, Michaels and Ross Dress For Less.
Following the grand opening, Aldi will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
