Trader Joe’s is officially coming to Jersey City.

The nautically themed grocery chain confirmed to NJBIZ its plans to open in the city; however, it did not say when or where.

Local media has reported Trader Joe’s will take space at 50-55 Hudson St. The site is home to a Tishman Speyer-owned mixed-use development in the works along the Hudson River waterfront.

Speculation about the chain dropping anchor in Jersey City began last fall, when the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District hinted at the possibility of a lease. The Jersey City Times estimated the store could open by 2027.

It would mark the chain’s second Hudson County outpost. Trader Joe’s in Hoboken began welcoming customers in 2016.

The upcoming store would also be located about a half mile from a Whole Foods Market that opened two years ago. Other grocery options in the neighborhood include ShopRite and BJ’s Wholesale Club.

Founded in 1967, Trader Joe’s is known for its cheerful crew members, customer service, and competitive pricing on a unique variety of seasonal and private-label food items. The California-based banner especially focuses on gourmet, organic and specialty goods, as well as frozen food products.

Across the U.S., Trader Joe’s has more than 630 stores. Following the launch of nearly 30 locations last year, the banner expects to keep the momentum going with the addition of at least a dozen sites nationwide in 2026.

Within New Jersey, Trader Joe’s currently has 20 stores. The chain expects to open new stores soon in West Orange and Montvale.
