Trader Joe’s is coming to West Orange.

Following the Feb. 4 green light from the township planning board, the nautically themed grocery chain plans to join the lineup at .

According to the application, Trader Joe’s plans to transform an 18,767-square-foot space previously occupied by Metropolitan Plant + Flower Exchange. Additionally, the chain will demolish an 8,980-square-foot greenhouse to the west of the building to create additional parking.

The 184 parking spaces include four ADA-designated spots and four for EV charging. The parking area will also have new sidewalks, circulation improvements and upgraded lighting.

Following its grand opening, Trader Joe’s will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. It will employ about 80 workers and receive two to three deliveries per day, according to the proposal.

The 29,187-square-foot shopping center on Mount Pleasant Avenue also houses a liquor store, cleaners, nail salon, convenience store and bagel shop.

A spokesperson for Trader Joe’s told NJBIZ the company does not have a confirmed timeline for the new store’s debut.

Dropping anchor elsewhere in NJ

Founded in 1967, Trader Joe’s is known for its cheerful crew members, customer service, and competitive pricing on a unique variety of seasonal and private-label food items. The California-based banner especially focuses on gourmet, organic and specialty goods, as well as frozen food products.

Across the U.S., Trader Joe’s has more than 630 stores. Following the launch of nearly 30 locations last year, the banner expects to keep the momentum going with the addition of at least a dozen sites nationwide in 2026.

Within New Jersey, Trader Joe’s currently has 20 stores.

After West Orange, Trader Joe’s aims to open a store at a soon-to-close The Fresh Market in Montvale.

The chain has not confirmed reports it is looking to open in downtown Jersey City. However, local media has reported Trader Joe’s will take space at 50-55 Hudson St. The site houses a forthcoming Tishman Speyer-owned mixed-use development along the Hudson River waterfront.
