A second Whole Foods Market could be coming to Jersey City.
The upscale Amazon-owned grocery chain is looking to open a 25,000-square-foot store on the ground floor of a proposed 54-story mixed-use tower in Journal Square.
The project at 2873 John F. Kennedy Blvd. would also include more than 800 residential units with at least 82 income-restricted units. Additionally, the project would incorporate 50,000 square feet of retail spread across the first and second floors, Better Blocks New Jersey noted.
After winning approval from the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency earlier this month, the plan must undergo final review by the Jersey City Planning Board. If given the green light, the project would replace the existing two-store mixed-used building, Jersey Digs reported.
Better Blocks New Jersey noted the development would not include parking — a first for a grocery store in Jersey City. The nonprofit believes the approach reflects a bet on a growing car-free customer base in Journal Square.
The site is adjacent to the soon-to-reopen Loews Jersey Theatre. It’s also across from the Journal Square PATH station and a new small-format Target store on the ground level of Kushner Cos’s mixed-use development The Journal.
A spokesperson for Whole Foods confirmed that a new store is in development in Jersey City but did not share additional details. “We look forward to continuing to serve the Jersey City community with high-quality natural and organic products and an unparalleled grocery shopping experience,” they said.
Whole Foods made its Jersey City debut three years ago downtown.
The proposed location would also expand the chain’s footprint in Hudson County. Whole Foods has a full-fledged marketplace at Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken and recently launched grab-and-go shop in Hoboken.
