Aldi is doubling its footprint in one South Jersey town.
After recently receiving approval from the Vineland Planning Board, the no-frills grocer will convert a vacant Rite Aid pharmacy on West Landis Avenue into a supermarket.
As part of the project, Aldi plans to add a 2,700 square feet to the building. The addition will increase the total size to 21,421 square feet.
This would mark the chain’s second outpost in Vineland. Aldi already has a site about 4 miles away at 3880 S. Delsea Drive that opened in 2019.
Associated improvements on the new 3-acre site will include removal of an existing drive-thru lane, landscaping enhancements and adding a loading dock. The design proposes 85 parking spaces, according to planning board minutes.
A timeline for construction and opening has not been announced. A spokesperson for Aldi did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The former Rite Aid location has sat empty for over a year. The store was among the first round of closures tied to Rite Aid’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in May 2025.
Founded 64 years ago in Germany, Aldi is known for its low prices and private label brands. The chain debuted in the U.S. in 1976. Since then, the chain has opened nearly 2,700 stores nationwide.
As part of a $3.4 billion initiative to expand its footprint and modernize its existing stores, Aldi has grown its presence across New Jersey by building new locations as well as revamping old ones over the past five years. It now has 70 stores locally.
In March 2024, the company also announced it would invest $9 billion to add 800 new stores across the U.S. According to Aldi, 330 of those supermarkets will open in the Northeast and Midwest over the next four years.
