New Jersey businesses will have an extra month to file their 2019 corporate business tax returns with the state government, under an order Gov. Phil Murphy signed Thursday afternoon.

Prior to the order, returns would have been due Thursday; with the extension they are now due on Nov. 16.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented circumstances for many of the businesses that call the Garden State home,” the governor said in a Thursday afternoon statement accompanying his executive order.

With the COVID-19 pandemic slamming into New Jersey in the spring, statewide restrictions saw businesses such as restaurants, casinos, malls, gyms, nail and hair salons, non-essential retailers, indoor entertainment, and theaters shutter their doors or dramatically scale back operations to comply with shutdown orders.

Those restrictions were gradually lifted beginning in mid-June, but triggered record-high unemployment this spring.

“It has been difficult for many businesses to meet the deadline for both federal and state returns,” the governor added. “We are again extending the deadline to give businesses more time to properly complete the filing process.”

During the spring, many business owners requested an extension until Oct. 15 to file their federal corporate business tax returns, hence the added one-month extension for the state’s CBT tax returns, the governor said.
