Newark Liberty International Airport is one of the busiest depots in the country – to its own detriment of late – serving more than 14 million passenger last year. To keep that many people happy it helps to have an eye for detail. And according to Cintas Corp., EWR does.
Newark Airport‘s new “all-gender” bathrooms at Terminal B were announced as a top 10 finalist for the 2022 America’s Best Restroom contest from the Cincinnati-based supplier, now in its 21st year.
“This year’s top 10 finalists include small and large businesses from diverse categories competing for the title of America’s Best Restroom,” said Cintas Marketing Manager Julia Messinger in a statement. “The public holds higher standards for the cleanliness and technology used in public restrooms which is why we’re proud to recognize these businesses that maintain clean and exceptional facilities.”
The airport is the only finalist from New Jersey to appear on the list.
Looking back
In 2020, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey announced a $19 million investment, along with $25 million from United Airlines to modernize restroom facilities at Newark Liberty International Airport. Read more.
According to Cintas, the new facility at Newark Airport was required due to inadequate capacity at existing restrooms. The design is not separated by gender, as is traditionally the case, but instead offers “public environments that allow privacy for all users.” The inclusive solution also afforded accommodations for a larger number of users than a traditional configuration would have allowed. The space includes areas for other members of your party to wait in, or to reorganize your belongings. Aesthetically, local Garden State imagery is integrated into glass and tile, establishing “a sense of place to remind users where they might have visited or what they might want to experience during a return trip.”
“Sound and scent compliment the visual experience to create a calming environment,” the airport’s entry concluded.
Finalists were selected based on cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements.
