The issues continue Monday at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Over the weekend, another radar and radio outage took place at the facility that marshals air traffic at EWR. That led to a ground stop of about 45 minutes May 11. It was the third such reported outage since late April.
“There was a telecommunications issue at Philadelphia TRACON Area C, which guides aircraft in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport airspace,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in a May 11 statement. “The FAA briefly slowed aircraft in and out of the airport while we ensured redundancies were working as designed. Operations have returned to normal. We will continue to update the public as we work through these issues.”
Then the new week began with more problems stemming from staffing – the other major piece, along with equipment in dire need of modernization, in this equation that has led to the bumpy last few weeks at EWR.
“Due to FAA staffing issues, the FAA has instituted a Ground Delay Program at #EWR. Please contact your airline for the status of your flight,” the FAA wrote in a May 12 statement.
That remains in effect as of this writing.
