The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced May 1 that the first quarter of 2023 saw airports, bridges and tunnels exceed pre-pandemic levels.
According to the bi-state agency, its commercial airports handled a record number of travelers during Q1, with 32 million passengers total at Newark Liberty International, JFK and LaGuardia airports—surpassing the previous record set in 2019 by nearly 1 million passengers.
The agency made particular note of the volumes at Newark and LaGuardia, which have each recently opened new, world-class terminals. Newark had 11.1 million passengers in Q1, while LaGuardia had 7.2 million, shattering previous first-quarter records from 2019 of 10.4 million and 6.7 million, respectively.
In the first period of 2023, the Port Authority’s six crossings hit their highest Q1 volumes since 2008, up by nearly 3% from levels recorded during the first three months of pre-pandemic 2019.
In Q1 of this year, the bridges and tunnels handled a total of 28.7 million eastbound vehicles, nearly 3% higher than the volume handled in the first quarter of 2019.
The Port Authority says that 2023 first-quarter volumes also surpass those handled during any first quarter since 2008, when 29.7 million eastbound vehicles used the crossings.
Meanwhile, the Port of New York and New Jersey was the nation’s second-busiest port during Q1, moving nearly 1.8 million TEUs, which was similar to 2019 levels.
The PATH continues to have a sluggish rebound to reach pre-pandemic ridership, but saw some encouraging trends in the first quarter. That figure rose to 11.3 million passengers, which was 59% of the ridership during Q1 of pre-pandemic 2019. The Port Authority says that PATH’s quarterly ridership has steadily increased with the second half of 2022 also hitting 54% and 57% of 2019 volumes.
Last month, PATH served 4.2 million passengers, the first-time total ridership climbed above 60% of pre-pandemic levels, hitting 61% of March 2019 levels.
