Rutgers University’s first-year applications for the coming school year increased 9.5 percent from a year earlier to 45,000 apps.Rutgers University’s first-year applications for the coming school year increased 9.5 percent from a year earlier to 45,000 apps.

University President Robert Barchi told the Rutgers Board of Governors on Tuesday that the number of applicants includes a 20 percent increase in domestic out-of-state applications.

Rutgers graduated 18,000 students this spring and held a topping-off ceremony June 4 at RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center.

“We continue to mark our progress not just by our students and faculty but our facilities,” Barchi said.

In other news, the Rutgers board appointed attorney David Lopez as co-dean of Rutgers Law School in Newark. Lopez served as general counsel of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2010-2016.
