Gas tax increase hits NJ drivers as 2026 begins
New Jersey drivers are paying more at the pump after a 4.2-cent uptick took effect Jan. 1, 2026, to fund transportation projects statewide.

The Treasury Department announced this week that New Jersey motorists can expect an uptick of 2.6 cents per gallon, effective Jan. 1, 2025.

NJ’s gas tax for motorists going down Oct. 1
Filling up at the pump just got a little cheaper as an 8.3 cent decrease comes after the state hit drivers with a 9.3 cent-per-gallon hike last year.
