Trenton-based TerraCycle is teaming up with clothing manufacturer GoldToe to offer free sock recycling.

As part of a program announced March 29, consumers will be able to recycle used socks from any brand, which will then be made into new products. In return, participants will receive points that can be used as donations to nonprofits, schools or charitable organizations of their choice.

To participate, individuals, offices and other organizations can mail in used socks via a prepaid shipping label found on the TerraCycle website. Once received, the fabrics are separated into their respective categories and reused, upcycled or recycled as appropriate, the companies said.

A subsidiary of Gildan Activewear Inc., GoldToe is known for its modern and durable socks in a range of styles from premium dress to casual to athletic.

In a statement, Gildan’s vice president of marketing Emma Budzisz said, “We are pleased to partner with TerraCycle to provide customers with an innovative yet simple way to divert waste from landfills by giving new life to their socks.”

She added, “We believe that clothes should be made with respect from start to finish, and that includes the end-of life of our garments.”

TerraCycle Chief Executive Officer and founder Tom Szaky said the new program will encourage consumers “to embed responsible practices into their daily lives by cleaning out their drawers and doing some good for the planet and their community, all without compromising convenience.”

Founded in 2001, TerraCycle has become a global leader in the collection and repurposing of otherwise non-recyclable pre- and post-consumer waste.

With operations in 21 countries, TerraCycle is now multimillion-dollar enterprise that helps some of the world’s largest companies operate more sustainably by creating platforms to recycle products and packaging that would otherwise end up in a landfill or incinerator. Just a few of the partnerships forged over the last two decades include with Burger King, Taco Bell, Gerber, and Stanley Black & Decker.

TerraCycle is also celebrating a milestone this month with one of its collaborative partners, Subaru of America Inc.

Since the two companies teamed up in April 2018, their efforts have helped divert more than 8 million pieces of hard-to-recycle trash from landfills across the country through the Subaru Loves the Earth initiative.

During the annual effort in April, and throughout the year, the Camden-headquartered automaker works with TerraCycle to offer recycling solutions at more than 600 participating Subaru retailer locations nationwide to help transform trash into products that benefit their communities.

“It’s up to all of us to make the world a more sustainable place, and together with our retailers, we’re committed to keeping our environment beautiful and clean now and in the future,” said Alan Bethke, senior vice president of marketing, Subaru of America Inc. “We invite everyone in our communities to join our nationwide recycling effort this April and look for opportunities to recycle with their local, participating Subaru retailer.”
