The announced May 20 that the New York Islanders will serve as the club’s affiliate. The collaboration begins with the franchise’s inaugural season this fall at .

The agreement gives the Islanders a direct developmental pipeline to Trenton. The team also joins that organization’s new American Hockey League affiliate in Hamilton, Ontario, as part of the club’s farm system structure.

The announcement comes less than a week after the Ironhawks unveiled its inaugural 2026-27 schedule. The Oct. 24 home opener against the Adirondack Thunder will mark the return of professional hockey to Trenton for the first time in 13 years.

“We are excited to partner with Trenton as our new ECHL affiliate and bring professional hockey back to New Jersey’s capital city,” said Islanders General Manager and Executive Vice President Mathieu Darche. “Trenton has a great organization, led by Bob Ohrablo, and has set a platform for our prospects to develop both on and off the ice.”

The affiliation marks another key step for the Ironhawks franchise.

The team was officially unveiled in January following a fan-driven naming contest that generated more than 2,000 submissions. As NJBIZ reported, officials said the “Ironhawks” identity reflects Trenton’s industrial history and regional pride. The design combines imagery tied to ironworking and the hawk as symbols of grit and resilience.

“We are proud to welcome the NY Islanders and their new AHL team in Hamilton, Ontario, as part of the Ironhawks family,” said Team President Bob Ohrablo.

“Judging by the early support for the Ironhawks, Islanders prospects will develop in an electric atmosphere and a community that loves cheering them on.”

The Ironhawks will begin their inaugural season Oct. 16 in Canada against the Trois-Rivières Lions before traveling to face Adirondack the following night.

The hotly anticipated opening Night in Trenton later that month is expected to feature extensive fanfare.  The city’s former professional hockey team, the Trenton Titans, ceased operations in 2013.

“We’re thrilled that Trenton will be affiliated with the Islanders, and we’re excited to welcome Islanders fans to take a short trip down the Turnpike to watch their next generation of talent developing right here at the CURE Arena,” said Mercer County Executive Dan Benson.

The franchise will play a 36-game home schedule during its inaugural campaign. The schedule includes 12 meetings with the Reading Royals, the ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Several Islanders prospects saw ECHL action last season, including forwards Cam Berg, Jesse Nurmi and Gleb Veremyev, defensemen Calle Odelius and Jesse Pulkkinen, and goaltenders Tristan Lennox and Henrik Tikkanen.
