The Trump administration on June 19 followed through with its pledge to commit nearly $767 million to the long-stalled construction project for a century-old bridge famously considered a choke point in one of the nation’s busiest rail routes.

Last week’s move marks a major win for Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, who frequently sparred with U.S. President Donald Trump, a Republican, but has taken on a much warmer stance as the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the nation in recent months.

New Jersey planned to finance roughly half of the $1.8 billion project, known as the Portal North Bridge, which would replace the existing two-track swing-style Portal Bridge.

The bridge has typically become stuck after allowing boats along the Hackensack River to pass underneath it, snarling rail traffic. To help take the pressure off the bridge, the U.S. Coast Guard announced in March 2019 that it would ban boat traffic from traveling under the bridge during the morning and evening rush hours.

The planned replacement would raise the height of the bridge, eliminating any such need altogether.

Still, the announcements fall short of the considerably larger, $9.5 billion Hudson River tunnels project, which would replace existing century-old structures damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Like with the Portal North Bridge, up until now federal transit officials have denied funding for one reason or another, prompting accusations of political retaliation against New Jersey and New York.

The tunnel and bridge make up $30 billion of infrastructure upgrades, overhauls and facelifts across New York City and New Jersey collectively called the Gateway Program.

“What’s good for Portal is good for the Hudson Tunnel Project as well. Because together, they are key elements in unlocking the 109-year-old bottleneck that delays the entire Northeast Corridor,” Steven Cohen, general counsel at the Gateway Development Corp., which will actually handle construction of the tunnel and bridge, said in a Friday statement.

Trump first announced the breakthrough on the bridge funding earlier in June, after a weekend dinner with Murphy at the president’s golf club in Bedminster. The two have largely praised each other’s work at their respective offices, including how they’ve handled the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Talked about many things, including the reopening of the beautiful Garden State, getting people back to work, and rebuilding America’s infrastructure with projects like the Portal North Bridge, which I have given authorization to proceed!” the president tweeted on June 12.
