The United Way of Greater Newark (UWGN) and the Newark Asset Building Coalition (NABC) want to set up New Jerseyans for success with an upcoming Personal Finance Fair.

Set for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. May 20, the free event is open to all and will take place in the Science Park High School cafeteria, 260 Norfolk St. in Newark.

Organizers say the fair will feature financial tips from local community-based organizations, financial institutions and other nonprofit partners.

“Personal Finance plays a crucial role in setting individuals up for financial stability and success,” UWGN President and CEO Catherine Wilson said in a statement. “This Personal Finance Fair will allow our community members to hear from experts about a variety of topics and programs tailored specifically to the greater Newark community that can benefit them and their families.”

Richard Greco, UWGN chief development officer, told NJBIZ that what’s exciting about this event is that it will be more than tabling; there will be four breakout sessions “where those attending can learn and dive into a specific topic for 30 minutes.”

Twenty participants will win a $25 Amazon gift card during the event. There will also be free lunch for all attendees as well as additional prizes, giveaways and raffles.

Specific topics covered at the fair will include:

  • Benefits of Credit Unions and Referrals
  • Foreclosure Assistance
  • Financial Mindfulness and Goal Setting for Postsecondary Education
  • Free Tax Preparation
  • Paying for College: Financial Aid Workshop
  • First Time Homeowners Mortgage Assistance Program
  • High Costs of a Low Credit Score
  • Introduction to Credit (PNC Bank will provide this session in Spanish)

Additionally, there will be a lunch-and-learn networking session with the more than 10 partners in attendance, where participants are invited to answer personal finance questions.

The event sponsor is Capital One. CitiBank, JPMorgan Chase, PNC Bank and Resourceful Coaching will each host financial literacy presentations during the breakout sessions, while New Community Corp., United Community Corp. and The Newark City of Learning Collaborative join United Way of Greater Newark as nonprofit organizations presenting.

Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-registration also is available by clicking here
