U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez, D-8th District, announced Monday NJ Transit received a grant to install new equipment at the NY Waterway Weehawken Ferry Maintenance Facility.
Menendez’s office said the $6.32 million award comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation under the Fiscal Year 2024 Passenger Ferry Grant Program. It will go toward installing a wave attenuator at the facility, which prevents waves, high tides, and floods from harming vessels and impacting service for riders.
“The funding and construction of the wave attenuation screen is an essential step in ensuring the safety and modernization of our ferry maintenance facility,” said Armand Pohan, chairman, president and CEO of NY Waterway.
Pohan thanked federal and state partners for their support in recognizing the importance of the project and helping to secure this “critical funding.”
“This structure serves the needs of the ferry system and the thousands of riders we serve, as well as the need for resiliency protection of property along the neighboring Weehawken shoreline,” he added.
“NJ TRANSIT is pleased to have supported NY Waterway in securing this federal funding, which will enhance the safety and reliability of ferry services at Weehawken,” said NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kevin Corbett. “Ferries are an integral part of our state’s transportation network, providing critical connectivity and mobility every day for thousands of New Jerseyans.”
“This grant will ensure that our transit system is more resilient, reliable, and fulfilling the needs of New Jerseyans and people throughout the region,” said Menendez, who serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. “NJ Transit and NY Waterway play a critical role in our public transportation system, and I’m grateful to the Biden-Harris Department of Transportation for prioritizing these important upgrades to their facilities.”
