E-commerce giant Amazon is gearing up to expand its innovative model across New Jersey through a partnership .

The partners launched the state’s first Amazon One Medical location last March in Edgewater. Next the partners will follow it up with one next month in Jersey City and another in Englewood in 2026. A facility in Hoboken is also tentatively planned, according to Hackensack Meridian Health CEO Robert Garrett.

During a June 17 ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site, Garrett said, “We hope to have 20 or maybe even more of these types of centers … It’s so well needed. We’re going to be looking at different locations throughout the State of New Jersey in terms of where we think there’s need for greater access to care.”

‘Thinking big’

Neil Lindsay is senior vice president for Amazon Health Services. He said his group’s mission “is to make it dramatically easier for patients, customers, and members to find, choose, afford and engage with everything they need to get and stay well, whether that’s a product, service or professional.”

“We want to make what should be easier, actually easier in health care, and this is a step in that direction. As many of you know, it can be quite hard to get a primary care appointment. And also, the health care experience can be quite fragmented in many cases. It’s disjointed between primary care and other aspects of health care.

“While together in this partnership, we want to address both those issues,” Lindsay said. “We are really excited to be able to offer same and next day appointments of our medical and a high-quality experience, and to partner with Hackensack Meridian Health in delivering a really connected experience to really help with that continuity of care we all need and deserve. So, as you need a specialist or a hospital, a stay and visit, that we can coordinate that care much more effectively with this partnership.”

Lindsay said, “We are thinking big about many more locations in New Jersey so we can serve the hundreds of thousands of patients in this area that deserve quality of care from both and Hackensack.”

The doctor will see you now

At Amazon One Medical offers same- and next-day appointment availability for patients ages 18 and up, as well as on-site lab services.

In addition to everyday and preventative care, Amazon One Medical providers give physical exams and are equipped to handle most women’s health issues, including birth control, sexual health, cancer screenings, menopause and gynecological issues. Additionally, patients can book “mental health visits” to discuss concerns, receive referrals to a therapist or psychiatrist, or manage medications, according to Dr. Evelyn Chu, Amazon One Medical’s district medical director in New Jersey.

Amazon One Medical also has 24/7 virtual care services through its mobile app, including:

  • On-demand video visits
  • Secure provider messaging
  • “Treat Me Now” digital assessments for common health concerns
  • Vaccine and medical record access
  • Prescription renewals
  • Proactive reminders for follow-up care
  • Referrals

A milestone for care

Amazon acquired primary care chain One Medical in 2023 for $3.9 billion. Since, the company has been busy growing a network of more than 150 primary care offices in 20-plus markets.

Just a few of the systems that Amazon One Medical has affiliations with include Mount Sinai in New York, Montefiore Health System in New York, Mass General Brigham in Massachusetts and MedStar Health in Washington, D.C.

By teaming up with HMH, the largest and most integrated health care network in New Jersey, Amazon patients have access to a high-quality group of specialists, hospitals and facilities.

Garrett said, “We have 500 patient care locations now throughout New Jersey – that includes physician’s offices, the partnership with Amazon One Medical, surgery centers and urgent care centers. Ambulatory care is the fastest growing part of our network. If you think about it, more and more health care is being provided outside the four walls of the hospital. So, we’re really, really excited about days like this that really create a great milestone for the development of ambulatory care to save New Jersey.”

“About 1 out of 3 Americans do not have a primary care physician that they identify with. That’s over a hundred million people. The statistics are pretty much the same in New Jersey. And when you drill down and you think about people under 35 years old, that number becomes one out of two that do not have a primary care physician,” he explained.

A ‘Prime’ move

“What happens is a lot of those people end up in hospital emergency departments. That’s not the best place to receive primary care. It’s not the most appropriate place. And then we miss a lot in the way of prevention, and that’s why I believe chronic disease is on the increase here in New Jersey and across the nation. So, I think partnerships like this are going to be so important. We’re trying to grow primary care by incentivizing new medical students in our new medical school to go into primary care and through exciting partnerships like the one that we are experiencing today,” Garrett said.

Patients do not need to be Amazon Prime members to become a One Medical member. According to an HMH representative, “Prime members can add Amazon One Medical memberships as a benefit for $99 a year, and non-Prime members can get memberships for $199 a year.”

Membership covers access to Amazon One Medical’s technology and on-demand virtual care services at no extra cost. Amazon One Medical accepts most major insurance plans for in-person care or pre-scheduled remote visits. Patients can find out if their insurance plan is accepted by visiting OneMedical.com/insurance and searching for their local office.

Garrett said, “I’m also excited at the fact that it’s part of the Amazon network. Amazon Prime is so big in New Jersey – there’s over three million subscribers to Amazon Prime. And those people that are in that network will get a significant discount by being part of this one medical network. So, that’ll even provide more incentive to go and use primary care physicians. So, all in all, it’s such an exciting partnership.”

In Edgewater, the 4,000 square-foot medical office is located at the same mixed-use shopping center as Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market.
