As part of an effort to equip students with the resources, skills and experiences needed to challenge the underrepresentation of Hispanics in the workplace, Bergen Community College launched a new workforce development initiative.
Announced Feb. 21, the LatinxCEO program will empower aspiring Hispanic business professionals by providing students with real-world connections and career exploration opportunities, such as networking with regional executives, meeting entrepreneurs, participating in career shadowing and visiting worksites.
Bergen Community College President Eric Friedman pointed out that the new offering combines two priorities outlined in the school’s strategic goals: creating new workforce development initiatives and enhancing its approach to diversity, equity and inclusion.
After citing statistics from a USA Today analysis showing that Hispanics account for less than 4% of executives at S&P 100 companies, Friedman said, “This must begin to change. We have the opportunity to help move the needle. Today, as we introduce the LatinxCEO program, we’re making further progress in supporting our diverse community and developing a next generation workforce.”
Other BCC workforce development initiatives include a small business support specialist program launched in partnership with the Bergen County Business Resource Network that has seen students provide accounting marketing and operations assistance for more than 600 entrepreneurs.
The college is also seeking companies to serve as mentor businesses for the LatinxCEO program. For more information on how to participate, click here.
