Eleven months after breaking ground, biopharmaceutical company BeiGene celebrated a milestone for its $700 million manufacturing and R&D facility in Hopewell.

On March 21, the last piece of structural steel was laid for the new facility at the Princeton West Innovation Campus. Construction is expected to be complete next year, the company said.

BeiGene said the new facility, which was announced in 2021, will provide commercial-stage U.S. biologic pharmaceutical manufacturing, late-stage research and clinical development capabilities that expand upon its existing capabilities globally.

In a statement, BeiGene co-founder, Chairman and CEO John Oyler said building this flagship facility was important for the company as it works toward new U.S. Food and Drug Administration approvals, including for Brukinsa, used for the treatment of adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

“Adding these manufacturing and R&D capabilities in the U.S. is a major step toward fulfilling our vision to create impactful medicines that will be affordable and accessible to far more cancer patients around the world,” Oyler added.

The new campus will have approximately 400,000 square feet of dedicated commercial-stage biologic pharmaceutical manufacturing space with the ability to add 600,000 more.

BeiGene expects to hire nearly 100 employees by the end of 2023, with more when construction is complete.

“Hopewell Township is pleased to see BeiGene following through with its plans to build a state-of-the-art center here,” said Hopewell Township Mayor Michael Ruger. “We are excited that our talented and experienced workforce will have the opportunity to help BeiGene develop and manufacture lifesaving medicines.”
