Portal Innovations will officially open the New Jersey Innovation Hub, Powered by Portal, at HELIX in New Brunswick July 14. The nearly 30,000-square-foot life sciences incubator launches with 16 founding member companies already committed. The figure marks the largest pre-launch member cohort across the company’s national network.
The hub sits within the first building of the HELIX innovation district in New Brunswick. It is designed to support emerging biotechnology, healthcare, life sciences and technology companies by providing laboratory space, office infrastructure, investor connections, strategic partnerships and founder-focused programming.
Executive Director Sangeetha Ramsagar leads the facility, overseeing the hub’s strategy, operations and ecosystem development. The launch represents another milestone for HELIX.
NJBIZ has previously reported on the multi-building innovation district that is taking shape as one of New Jersey’s premier centers for research, entrepreneurship and commercialization in the life sciences.
A partnership involving the State of New Jersey, Rutgers University, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick Development Corp., BioNJ and the broader HELIX ecosystem developed the hub.
“Opening our doors with 16 founding member companies already committed to the community is an incredible milestone,” said John Flavin, founder and CEO of Portal Innovations. “The response we’ve seen validates both the strength of New Jersey’s innovation ecosystem and the need for a connected national network of environments and a value-driving community intentionally built to help founders start, grow, and scale transformative companies.”
The founding members represent a broad cross-section of emerging life sciences, biotechnology, healthcare and technology companies, alongside organizations supporting commercialization and industry growth.
Scott Kachlany, co-founder and chief scientist of Larada Therapeutics, said the hub provides startups with more than laboratory space.
“As a growing biotechnology company, being part of an ecosystem that combines laboratory infrastructure with industry relationships and collaboration opportunities is incredibly valuable,” said Kachlany. “We’re excited to join the New Jersey Innovation Hub and be part of a community focused on advancing innovation across life sciences and healthcare.”
Christopher Paladino, president of DEVCO and HELIX, said the opening strengthens both the innovation district and New Brunswick’s role as a center for entrepreneurship.
“The opening of the New Jersey Innovation Hub marks an important milestone for HELIX and for New Brunswick’s continued growth as a center for innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Paladino. “We’re proud to partner with Portal Innovations to create a destination where groundbreaking companies can access the resources, talent, and connections needed to succeed.”

NJEDA Chief Executive Officer Evan Weiss said the hub reflects the state’s continued investment in entrepreneurs and innovation.
“To encourage startup creation and catalyze economic growth, Gov. Mikie Sherrill is committed to ensuring that entrepreneurs have the resources and tools needed to innovate and expand in New Jersey,” said Weiss. “The founding members of the New Jersey Innovation Hub at the HELIX will help bolster the Garden State’s leadership in innovation by supporting research, discovery, and breakthroughs in bioscience.”
Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald Rios said the incubator also reinforces the county’s broader economic development strategy.
“The Innovation Hub at H-1 will be the hotbed of new breakthroughs in bioscience and a catalyst for economic growth in this region,” said Rios. “Through the Middlesex County Office of Business Engagement, we attracted an international company, PharmaMedic, alongside a California-based innovator, Materium Technologies, as founding members.”
Beyond Portal Innovations’ national network of investors, pharmaceutical partners and leading research institutions, member companies will have access to:
Officials expect additional companies to join in the coming months as the New Jersey Innovation Hub continues to expand within HELIX and further strengthen New Brunswick’s growing life sciences and innovation ecosystem.
