Description: Founded in 1998, Burpee Materials Technology develops and manufactures metallic cardiovascular stents, stent delivery catheters and other devices noted for their precision. Its co-founders, Steve and Janet Burpee, have deep backgrounds in chemical, mechanical and metallurgical engineering, and more than four decades of combined experience in stent and catheter design, manufacturing optimization, and designing for manufacturing.

Philanthropy: Janet Burpee, the company’s CEO , has ridden in the New Jersey Ride Against AI DS, a 250-mile bike trip and fundraiser. The company, meanwhile, has often played host to blood drives organized by the Central Jersey Blood Center. Best Decision: Designing and patenting its own device, known as the FlexStent, a flexible, durable, recapturable stent. From there, Burpee spun off a new company, Flexible Stenting Solutions, in 2006, and sold it seven years later.

Goals: To grow the company’s stent delivery system capabilities and launch a new product that will be available worldwide.
