A New York-based gourmet cookie café chain will soon make its Garden State debut, opening three shops in North Jersey this winter.
Chip City Cookies is preparing to open a location in Newark (2 Gateway Center) on Jan. 24, followed by stores in Hoboken (113 Washington St.) and Ridgewood (305 E. Ridgewood Ave.) at later dates.
Founded in Astoria, Queens, six years ago by childhood friends Peter Phillips and Teddy Galias, Chip City is known for its thick, fresh-baked core cookies, such as chocolate chip and cookies & cream, as well as a rotating menu of specialty flavors, like s’mores, blueberry cheesecake, funfetti, cannoli and lemon berry. It also offers seasonal drinks, hot coffee and espresso.
Chip City recently received a $10 million investment from Enlightened Hospitality Investments (EHI), the growth equity fund associated with restaurateur Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG), to accelerate growth plans to scale the cookie concept beyond New York City and strengthen its brand position within the increasingly competitive cookie segment.
Besides providing Chip City with capital, EHI will offer its expertise in fast casual retail operations, giving strategic and operational guidance in partnership with USHG, which operates popular restaurants like Shack Shake, Union Square Cafe and Gramercy Tavern.
Chip City currently has 14 locations across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. In addition to opening shops in New Jersey, the chain plans to launch in Florida soon. It also aims to grow its direct-to-consumer business, bolstered by its ship-anywhere partnership with Uber Eats.
