Coworking space company Desk is launching its inaugural space June 14 in New Brunswick, with one to follow early next year in Montclair, the firm announced on May 17.

Co-founder Gerrit Curran said that this past year’s separation from the office has shone a light on the move into a “new age of flexible work culture.”

“Remote work can improve productivity, but in the extreme case of long-term quarantines, studies showed that people also need access to privacy and collaboration,” said Curran, who founded Desk with Alex Burkhead. “This is really exciting for Desk and other spaces. Our mix of private offices, collaborative open-space, and community-based amenities offer options for everyone that needs access to a productive environment.”

Desk features private offices that can be rented on a month-to-month basis, open-concept desks, and conference rooms that can be rented by the hour for non-members. Amenities include private fiber internet and bottomless coffee from Hidden Grounds, a New Brunswick-based coffee shop with a handful of locations around the state.

Desk, a coworking company with three planned locations, will open its first location in New Brunswick on June 14, 2021.

“We designed Desk with a focus on private offices because we think it is vital that members have their own personal space, but we also dedicated a quarter of the floor to community areas where members can socialize and promote ideas,” Curran said. “Because of this marriage between private space and community-based amenities, we are attracting top leaders and thinkers in Middlesex County.”

With its opening, Desk is launching a Scarlet Fellowship and an Artist Fellowship, which open the doors for free two- to three-month programs for Rutgers students and local artists who can then take advantage of Desk’s coworking spaces and business resources to move toward their goals.

Desk Director Tristen Wallace, who is heading up the fellowship programs, said he hopes they put Desk on track to becoming a community hub.

“The chosen students will be able to display their talents and ventures to our business network, while the artists can use our walls and space as a launchpad for their next creative project,” Wallace said. “Our flexible office platform brings turnkey infrastructure for small businesses and freelancers, limits lease liabilities for corporations, supports Rutgers students, local artists and entrepreneurs and fosters connection and collaboration within the community.”

Early memberships are available. The inaugural location is at 37 Easton Ave. in New Brunswick, and a second location opens in June in Westport, Conn. The address of the Montclair location has not been announced yet.
