What leadership traits have served you well? And on the flip side, what have you learned that tends to hold women leaders back?

The Marine Corps has instilled certain leadership traits that I have applied to myself such as having decisiveness and showing initiative. These qualities have been essential for my leadership journey. However, gender biases and stereotypes pose significant obstacles for women leaders, highlighting the importance of ongoing efforts to overcome these obstacles.

Over the past two years, what as a woman have you learned regarding work/life balance?

Over the past two years, I’ve learned that work-life balance as a woman requires setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and being willing to delegate tasks when needed. It’s an ongoing process of finding what works best for me in balancing career and personal life.

Women mentors are so important in this day and age. Do you mentor others or did you have a mentor who was inspirational in your life?

I believe that women mentors are incredibly important. I’ve been fortunate enough to have inspirational mentors in my life such as MSgt Luz Morales and Maria del Pilar Rivas, and I also have had the honor of mentoring others. It’s been personally a fulfilling cycle of support and growth that contributes to personal and professional success.

The journey for women in leadership can be tough. We often encounter external obstacles such as biases & barriers, particularly if you are a young woman of color. But it’s not just
external challenges; we also battle with internal struggles as well. It’s about finding a balance between overcoming the odds against us and dealing with our own inner critics.

What key resources have you sought out to help you lead your company/organization?

I’ve tapped into industry networking events, fellow colleagues, and my mentors to enhance my leadership skills and stay updated on industry trends. Alongside my business partner, Ahmet Akdag, who has been an invaluable asset in leading our company. His expertise and support have been crucial.

What valuable career lessons or lessons would you like to share with others?

Have confidence in yourself and your decisions. Don’t underestimate yourself and don’t worry about proving yourself to others, trust that every decision you make is the correct decision. Strong leadership is being confident knowing that you can lead the table, not just bring something to it.

What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?

Embrace your unique strengths and talents, knowing that they are your greatest assets. Seek out mentors who can offer guidance and support as you navigate your journey. Stay resilient in the face of challenges, knowing that each obstacle is an opportunity for growth. Advocate fiercely, not just for yourself but for all women like you. Remember, your leadership has the power to spark change and create a better environment.

What is one quote or phrase you refer to when you need to pick me up or inspiration?

“You don’t always control your circumstances, but you can always control your response.”
