Freshpet launched its first-ever refrigerated vegetarian dog food brand Spring & Sprout on Sept. 8.
The initial rollout this month will include 900 Petco stores nationwide before a larger retail rollout next year.
Spring & Sprout combines high-protein plants with carrots, cranberries and cage-free eggs resulting in a pet food higher in protein than conventional pet food, according to the Seacaucus brand’s announcement.

“Freshpet has long been committed to pet welfare and the well-being of our planet,” said Scott Morris, Freshpet president and chief operating officer, in a prepared statement. “That’s why we created Spring & Sprout – a planet-friendly vegetarian pet food that gives pet parents an option that aligns with their own values while meeting the nutritional needs of their pets.”
The new line eliminates many environmental impacts associated with meat production, aligning with Freshpet’s commitment to “pets, people, and planet,” the announcement said.
Also in line with its commitment: Freshpet Kitchens are operated under a zero-waste philosophy, with all waste being reused, recycled or transformed into energy; and all recipes created in Freshpet kitchens are produced with built-in wind, water and CO2 savings, the announcement said.
Spring & Sprout joins Freshpet’s other brands including Deli Fresh, Fresh Treats, Freshpet Select, Homestyle Creations, Nature’s Fresh, Vital Freshpet Select, and Vital.
