Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard is keeping it cool in New Jersey.

After signing a deal with franchisee Disrupt Foods, the frozen dessert chain expects to add sites in and , according to a recent announcement. Additional details on when or where the new sites will launch were not immediately available from Rita’s.

Former NFL player Malcolm Jenkins and business partner Joe Johnson founded Piscataway-based Disrupt Foods in 2016. It focuses on expanding franchise ownership opportunities while creating pathways to economic growth via restaurant businesses.

The group’s portfolio of 30-plus units spanning six states includes chains such as Wing Stop, Papa John’s and Rita’s. It has also made investments in food and beverage brands including Kolkata Chai Co., Casa Azul Organic Tequila, Zenwtr and Feastables.

Founded 42 years ago in Pennsylvania, is known for its Italian ice, frozen custard, signature gelati treats and milkshakes. After rolling out a franchise program in 1989, the brand has grown to more than 600 locations worldwide.

Rita’s is in the midst of an ongoing expansion effort. The brand is targeting growth in both existing and new markets through flexible store formats, such as year-round sites and drive-thru locations. The chain has traditionally operated as a seasonal business.

Rita’s did not say whether Clifton and Newark would operate with a newer format or as a summer-only destination.

Over the past year, Rita’s says it has recorded a 100% increase in franchise ownership inquiries compared with 2025. And, after signing more than 30 new shops so far in 2026, the company says it is on track to double development agreements.

Rita’s Chief Development Officer Lawrence Brown shared, “We’re seeing tremendous interest from entrepreneurs who want a proven franchise backed by a recognizable brand and an operating model designed for long-term growth.”

“Combined with smaller kitchen footprints, low COGS [cost of goods sold] … no fryer requirements and staffing efficiencies, the model’s real estate flexibility allows franchisees to enter and adapt to local markets while benefiting from a straightforward business operation built to scale,” he said.
