South Jersey-based bakery ingredients manufacturer Puratos is expanding regenerative agriculture practices across its domestic wheat supply chain.

By enrolling 30 of its wheat flour volumes into mass balance regenerative agriculture programs in collaboration with farmers, cooperatives and milling partners, the Pennsauken-headquartered company aims to advance its previously stated goal to hit 50% regenerative sourcing by 2030, according to a press release. 

The newly announced initiative builds on programs launched in 2022 that seek to advance responsible sourcing both in the U.S. and globally.

Through those efforts, Puratos works with farmers, cooperatives and milling partners to promote practices that improve soil health, biodiversity and water management while also creating more resilient supply chains.

Defined by Puratos as an “outcome-based farming approach,” regenerative agriculture includes tactics like crop rotation, reduced tillage and cover cropping.

Farmers are dealing with real pressure, weather, yield, long-term viability, and what happens at that level impacts everything that follows. Our role is to work alongside our partners to build a more sustainable and robust supply chain, in a way that’s practical and scalable.”

Founded in 1919, Puratos provides innovative ingredients to the bakery, patisserie and chocolate sectors. It primarily serves large industrial bakers and retailers, along with foodservice chains, distributors and artisan customers.

The Belgium-headquartered company opened its first U.S. subsidiary in Boston in 1979 and began production in Pennsauken about four years later.

After moving to Cherry Hill, the company returned to Pennsauken in 2018 to establish a new U.S. base and innovation center as part of a bid to expand its presence here. Puratos also has a distribution center and industry leading manufacturing plant alongside that campus.

In June 2025, the company unveiled an industrial pilot bakery at its headquarters to support rapid prototyping and product development for commercial bakers.

Last fall, Puratos celebrated the launch of the first plant in the country dedicated entirely to making bakery glaze.
