The latest NJBIZ list of health insurance providers ranks companies by their 2024 New Jersey enrollee count. 

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey dominates with nearly 1.6 million enrollees. Gary St. Hilaire runs the Newark-based organization, which started operations in 1932. 

Founded in 1977, UnitedHealthcare Community & State ranks second with 345,683 enrollees in the Garden State. In August 2024, Jenny Ismert became CEO, replacing Krista Nelson, who moved to a role as COO at Optum Health. 

Aetna holds the third position with 291,704 enrollees in the state. In October 2024, David Joyner replaced Karen Lynch as CEO of CVS Health, which acquired Aetna in 2018. 

Established in 1975, UnitedHealthcare has 215,494 enrollees in New Jersey. 

Amerigroup New Jersey has 182,349 enrollees. Patrick Gox oversees the Iselin-based company, which was founded in 1994. 

The providers span founding years from 1853 to 2008.
