Over the weekend, the National Hockey League (NHL) announced that MetLife Stadium will play host to the 2024 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series.
Slated for Feb. 17-18, the event will feature marquee matchups involving the area professional hockey teams. On Saturday, the New Jersey Devils will take on the Philadelphia Flyers, and on Sunday, the New York Rangers will face off against the New York Islanders.
The 2024 NHL Stadium Series will feature the overall 40th and 41st NHL regular-season outdoor games, the third and fourth such scheduled for next season, and the first contests here in the Garden State.
The event will also mark the first time four NHL teams play an outdoor game at the same venue in front of fans.
“Our organization and fans are extremely proud to participate in the first outdoor NHL game hosted in New Jersey, especially at MetLife Stadium, so close to where championship memories were made,” said David Blitzer and Josh Harris, managing partners, New Jersey Devils, in a statement. “This marquee event against our Turnpike rivals on the national stage will create new memories for our fans, and a tremendous experience for our players.”
The Devils, who made a playoff run this year that was capped by a memorable first-round series win against the Rangers, play home games at the Prudential Center in Newark.
“We are thrilled to be playing in an NHL outdoor game and hosting our great fans at MetLife Stadium,” said Tom Fitzgerald, general manager, Devils. “I know how incredibly special an outdoor event can be for players and their families, our staff, partners, and especially our dedicated fans. We look forward to providing a great experience for all.”
“Obviously, our whole team is really excited to be able to play in an outdoor game here in New Jersey,” said Devils Captain Nico Hischier. “It’s something I have never experienced and will definitely be an event to remember.”
The Devils have played in one previous outdoor game: the 2014 NHL Stadium Series at Yankee Stadium against the Rangers, a 7-3 loss.
They enter next season after setting a franchise-record in wins this past season and with one of the best young cores in the NHL, led by superstar Jack Hughes.
Organizers say that pricing, ticket sales and broadcast information for the Stadium Series will be announced in the coming months.
MetLife is no stranger to epic sporting events, having hosted the Super Bowl in 2014.
