New Jersey American Water announced closing its acquisition of Montague Sewer & Water Co.‘s water and wastewater systems in Montague Township June 1.
The purchase is part of parent company American Water’s previously announced $315 million acquisition of systems across eight states from Nexus Regulated Utilities LLC.
All eight deals closed June 1, according to the Camden-based utility.
The Garden State acquisition adds about 810 water and 270 wastewater customer connections to NJ American Water’s service area. Two employees from Montague Sewer & Water join the team, as well.
“On behalf of our entire team, we are delighted to welcome our new customers and new employees to the New Jersey American Water family,” NJ American Water President Mark McDonough said in a statement. “We look forward to serving our new customers and helping to ensure a smooth transition by relying on the expertise of local employees who know these operations best.”
The company added that its new customers will receive additional information in the mail in the coming weeks. More details are also available on a dedicated webpage.
NJ American Water is the largest regulated water utility in the state with approximately 875 employees providing water and wastewater services to approximately 3 million residents.
The entire deal adds about 47,000 customer connections to American Water’s service area, as well as 70 employees.
In April, American Water received the first regulatory approval for its proposed merger with Pennsylvania-based Essential Utilities Inc. The green light from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio followed in May.
The transaction would create a leading regulated U.S. water and wastewater public utility with a pro forma market capitalization of approximately $40 billion and a combined enterprise value of approximately $63 billion, based on closing stock prices as of Oct. 24, 2025.
