New Jersey job growth holds steady in May

In May, the state maintained its level from April, with total nonfarm jobs totaling 4.39 million.

The New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development released the May June 19, based on preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Year-over-year from May 2024, the state added 25,300 jobs, with 82% of those gains in the private sector.

Five sectors recorded gains:

  • Leisure and hospitality +4,200
  • Professional and business services +900
  • Manufacturing +400
  • Trade, transportation and utilities +300
  • Financial activities +100

 

Four sectors recorded losses:

  • Health services -1,700
  • Construction -1,100
  • Information -900
  • Other services -900

 

Meanwhile, the state’s public sector lost 1,300 jobs. New Jersey’s rate remained unchanged at 4.8%; the national unemployment rate is 4.2%. The labor force participation rate was 63.8%.

The May report also noted that April jobs numbers were revised downward by 3,800 jobs – from 4,800 to 1,000; April’s unemployment rate remained at 4.8%.

The June jobs report comes out July 17.
