The work – and its success – is on full display in the state’s second-largest city: from the Newark Artist Collaboration’s public art installations to the renamed Harriet Tubman Square, where the company helped to fund a monument to Tubman that includes curated audio features from Audible. Within the organization, 1 in 6 of Audible’s headquarters employees live in the city and 65% of employees in the Live Local program have moved to Newark since starting with the company.
In August, the Center launched its latest effort, Newark Squared, aimed at incentivizing startups to expand or relocate to the city – especially founders of color and women. The program offers relocation assistance, capital for new leases and stipends for employees to live in Newark. In the Brick City, it also serves to activate a commercial corridor by addressing empty storefronts and offices.
“We wanted to be very intentional about that,” Glover told NJBIZ over the summer, with regard to filling vacancies. “Really exploring a range of different ways that we could be maximizing what our economic and our social impact looks like in Newark. This is our headquarters city. We are here, we want to continue to really play a key role in what the city’s revitalization looks like.” With innovation at the Center’s focus, and Glover in the lead, what that looks like continues to evolve.
